The College of Mathematics and Data Science of Minjiang University has a history of more than 60 years. In May 2002, the Department of Mathematics of the former Fuzhou Teachers College and the Department of Mathematics of the Minjiang Vocational University were merged to form the Department of Mathematics of the Minjiang University, with a major in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (normal). The major of Information and Computing Science was added in 2003. The enrolling started in 2004 for Information and Computing Science as a major. The Institute of Mathematics was established in October 2011. The enrolling started in 2017 for the orientation of Applied Statistics. In June 2018, the Department of Mathematics was renamed the College of Mathematics and Data Science (hereinafter referred to as the College). The College and BIDU jointly established the Baidu Big Data Innovation Institute of Minjiang University (affiliated to the College), for which the enrolling started in the same year.

The College has four undergraduate majors: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computational Science, Applied Statistics and Data Science and Big Data Technology. There are 546 full-time undergraduates.

The College currently has 38 full-time teachers, including 7 with senior titles, 14 with associate senior titles, 16 with intermediate titles; 14 doctors, and 17 masters. Approximately 80% of full-time teachers have a master’s degree or above. There is 1 provincial-level talent, 3 candidates of New Century Excellent Talent Support Plan of Colleges and Universities in Fujian Province, 1 candidate of Outstanding Young Research Talents Cultivation Plan of Colleges and Universities in Fujian Province, and 8 candidates (person-times) of Mindu Scholars Support Plan. The College has appointed Jiang Jiancheng, Associate Professor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as the Mindu Scholar Chair Professor, and Professor Liu Jinfu of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University as a visiting professor.

The College attaches great importance to discipline competitions, striving to “base on specialty, promote teaching through competition, and stimulate learning through competition.” The students have won 16 groups of national second prizes, 6 groups of national third prizes, 24 groups of provincial first prizes, 60 groups of provincial second prizes and 35 groups of provincial third prizes in mathematics competitions, mathematical modeling, data mining and other relevant competitions.

In the past five years, the College has achieved multiple outstanding results in the scientific research field. Nearly 170 academic papers have been published in CN and above journals in the name of first author/corresponding author, including nearly 70 high-level papers published in core journals (almost 60 papers can be retrieved by SCI and EI). In recent years, the College has presided over 5 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 projects of the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, 2 projects of the New Century Excellent Talents Support Plan for Fujian Provincial Universities, and 13 science and technology projects of the Education Department of Fujian Province. The College has also won one third prize of the 2014 Fujian Natural Science Award, and published two academic monographs in English.

The College invites well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad for forums and lectures, while creating opportunities to send teachers for study visit and training abroad. In recent years, 12 teachers have been sent to the University of Notre Dame, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Middle Tennessee State University, the Shizuoka University, the University of Fukuoka, the Queensland University of Technology, the Hong Kong Baptist University, and Feng Chia University in Taiwan, and Renmin University of China for study visit.

The College proactively develops university-enterprise, university-government, and university-university cooperation. It has cooperated with the Ocean Research Institute to apply for the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Research Center to the Education Department of Fujian Province; worked with Fuzhou Sanshan Training School, Fuzhou High-tech Zone Middle School, and Minhou Sixth Middle School to build educational internship Base; cooperated with Yonghui Supermarket, Fujian Branch of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, DFRZ and other well-known enterprises to build an internship base; cooperated with TipDM Intelligent Technology to train teachers and apply for industry-university collaborative education program of the Ministry of Education; cooperated with Fuzhou Zhiheng Technology to provide support for water affairs data analysis in Fuzhou.

The College now consists of 2 faculty Party branches and 2 student Party branches. With the goal of fostering integrity and promoting rounded development of people, and focusing on “standardization of daily management, co-construction of party branches, project activities for party branches”, the College makes use of the three platforms (Party Building Leading Group Construction, Concentric Power Center, and Digital Innovation M Space) to effectively promote all-out, thorough, and all-round education. In 2018, the second faculty Party branch was appraised as the Cultivation and Creation Unit of Model Party Branch for National Party Building Work.

Adhering to the schooling philosophy to “seek the best rather than the largest, and meet the needs of society” and the “Fuzhou-based, market, quality and application oriented” principle, the College takes fostering integrity and promoting rounded development of people as the fundamental, and connotative development as the focus in strengthening the comprehensive strength and improving the level of school running, working hard to build a distinctive application-oriented college.
