The College of Foreign Languages (hereinafter referred to as the College) was originated from the Department of Foreign Languages of Minjiang University, which was born by the merger of two departments, the Department of Foreign Languages of Fuzhou Teachers College (founded in 1958) and the Department of Foreign Languages of Minjiang Vocational University (founded in 1984), in 2002 and renamed the College of Foreign Languages in 2017.

The College has two undergraduate majors: English and Japanese. The English major is one of the first five undergraduate majors of Minjiang University, and the Japanese major was established in 2011. It boasts three secondary teaching units, namely the English Department, the Japanese Department, and the Department of Public Foreign Language Teaching. The English major is divided into three directions: business, translation, and normal education. The Japanese major focuses on the business Japanese. There are currently 783 students majoring in foreign languages.

There are 99 faculty members, including 88 full-time teachers, 24 professors and associate professors, 11 doctors (including 1 doctoral candidate), 2 key Mindu Scholar talents, and 1 Mindu Scholar chair professors, 7 to 9 foreign teachers. More than 70% of the teachers have studied or had an academic visit abroad.

In response to the university goal of developing into a “high-level and characteristic application-oriented university”, the College has established the goal to train “application-oriented foreign language talents”, for which it has forged close relations with local enterprises and institutions on education. The professional system integrating business, translation, and normal education has been increasingly distinctive. In recent years, the College has expanded its scope of international exchanges. As it has carried out teacher-student exchanges and teaching & research cooperation with universities such as Brock University in Canada, and Hiroshima university and Kobe Shoin Women’s University in Japan, many teachers and students have participated in the project training and learning activities initiated by foreign partners.

Firmly grasping the fundamental task of fostering integrity and promoting rounded development of people, the College strives to build a work system featuring all-out, thorough, and all-round education. The party building and ideological and political work is shown pragmatic and progressive: The Student First Party Branch was identified as a model branch cultivation unit in Fujian Province. The Student Youth League Branch was awarded the title of Fuzhou May 4th Red Flag Youth League Branch and the College the Advanced Unit of Sunny Sports.

    Teachers of the College are passionate and dedicated to imparting knowledge and educating people, while students are studious and enterprising in learning. With the features of school running highlighted in training of application-oriented talents and international exchanges, the College has evolved into an ideal platform for the career development of foreign language teachers as well as an ideal choice for students to pursue further studies.
