The School of Journalism and Communication of Minjiang University (hereinafter referred to as the School) was established in August 2018. The School joined hands with Phoenix Digital Media Industry Education Group, a subsidiary of Phoenix Satellite Television Group to establish the Phoenix Digital Media College, an industrial college that operates in the mode of “one institution bearing two names”.

The discipline of Journalism and Communication has a history of 35 years, with the schooling reputation ranking among the best in Fujian Province. The 1984 Journalism is one of the earliest majors established by the former Minjiang Vocational University (incorporated by the former Fuzhou Journalism College in September 1986). Many graduates have been the core force of the journalism industry in Fujian Province and even the whole country. The major of Journalism and Advertising was established in 2000, and the undergraduate major of Advertising in 2004. Over the 35 years of school running, more than 1,000 graduates have been widely acclaimed by employers. According to the Evaluation Report of Chinese Universities and Disciplines (2018-2019) released by the Network of Science & Education Evaluation in China, the advertising major of the School ranks 7th. According to the 2018 Social Impact Ranking of Undergraduate Programs released by the CUC Higher Education Communication and Public Opinion Monitoring Research Center, the advertising major ranks fifth among the well-known and regional first-class majors in China.

At present, the School consists of the Department of Journalism and Communication and the Department of Digital Art, including four undergraduate majors: Advertising, Cultural Industry Management, Network and New Media, and Digital Media Art, 431 current students. The School has 30 faculty members, including 22 full-time teachers, 4 professors, 13 associate professors, and 8 doctors. There is 1 provincial famous teacher, 2 candidates of New Century Excellent Talent Support Plan of Colleges and Universities in Fujian Province, and 4 part-time master tutors. The School has also hired 1 “Mindu Scholar” excellent professor, and 3 “Mindu Scholar” chair professors, among whom 1 has been selected as the “Minjiang Scholars” Distinguished Professor and 1 as the “Minjiang Scholar” Chair Professor.

In the past five years, the School has won the second and third prizes for outstanding social science achievements in Fujian Province, and the first and second prizes for higher education teaching achievements in Fujian Province. The major of Advertising has been awarded the teaching reform projects of “Fujian Characteristic Major”, “National Characteristic Major”, “Fujian Comprehensive Reform Pilot of Undergraduate Majors”, “Fujian Innovation Experimental Area of Talent Training Mode”, and “Fujian Characteristic Major of Service Industry”. Besides, the School actively organized students to participate in discipline competitions, in which the students have won more than 200 national discipline competition awards, and more than 20 national and provincial college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship training projects.

The School has established the “University Demonstration Base for Innovative Application of Digital Media Industry-Education Integration” under the Ministry of Education, and the research bases of humanities and social sciences in provincial colleges and universities - New Media Communication Research Center and Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Media Technology. The centers cover an area of about 700 square meters, including the Industrial Film and Television Editing and Production Laboratory, Photography Laboratory, Nonlinear Editing Laboratory, Practice Studio, New Media Creation Workshop and VR Maker Laboratory.

The School insists on open and cooperative education. Relying on the brand and resource advantages of the Phoenix Satellite TV Group, the School further promotes the industry-education integration and university-enterprise cooperation, and introduces a large number of real industry projects as teaching cases to facilitate the cultivation of high-quality application-oriented compound talents. A cooperative relationship has been established with the College of Communication and Information of the University of Kentucky in the United States, based on which outstanding students are selected to the University of Kentucky for exchanges and study every year. A memorandum of understanding has been signed with the University of the West of Scotland to promote cooperation in education and academic research.

The School has always adhered to the socialist direction of school running. Firmly centering on the fundamental task of “fostering integrity and promoting rounded development of people,” it has strengthened the party building to encourage team building. Based on the theme of the times and major characteristics, efforts have been made to explore new ways of all-out, thorough, and all-round education, resulting in certain achievements.

In the future, the School will, with the orientation of demands of industrial chain and innovation chain, form a demonstrative specialty group that combines advertising, network and new media, cultural industry management, and digital media art. The Phoenix Digital Media College will be built into a first-class and nationally renowned demonstration college of digital creative industry-education integration.
