The College of Zhidao International Lacquer Art (hereinafter referred to as the College) is an industrial college jointly established by Minjiang University and Fujian Zhidao Investment & Development Co., Ltd. in July 2018.

The two sides carry out teaching, scientific research and marketing centering around the lacquer art industry, aiming to build internationally renowned lacquer art disciplines and cultivate high-level lacquer art talents, promote industry-education integration through in-depth cooperation. In terms of the schooling featuring industry-education integration and unity of knowing and doing, the College optimizes curriculum settings based on the need for lacquer art talents by Fuzhou lacquer art cultural brand strategy and the industrial demand design, and gradually explores and opens innovative classes as appropriate. In addition, the College strengthens the construction of lacquer art discipline system and scientific research, and builds an internationally renowned lacquer art industry brand, providing talent support for the development of Fuzhou lacquer art industry.

University-enterprise cooperation and industry-education integration have been employed for teaching mode. The two sides jointly study and develop a training plan and invite experts to for perfection. According to the characteristics of lacquer art teaching, a gradual and progressive curriculum system, the from-easy-to-difficult and from-simple-to-fine tradition is carried on from underground craftsmanship, technical foundations, decorative techniques to lacquer art creation.

The Zhidao International Lacquer Art and Culture Park is a Chinese lacquer culture and education base that integrates teaching, scientific research, art exhibitions, innovation and entrepreneurship, etc. It is the only lacquer art and culture park based in a university in China, and is also China's first national intangible cultural heritage lacquer culture IP industrial park. In terms of park planning, there are platforms including Minjiang University International Young Lacquer Artist Incubation Base - China’s first cultural industry innovation and entrepreneurship service platform under the Ministry of Culture, China’s first lacquer culture and industry research center, and China’s first provincial new lacquer materials engineering research center and other platforms provide academic, providing academic and technical support, and entrepreneurship and employment guidance for the discipline construction and talent training of the College.

Currently, there are 6 faculty members and 51 students. The teaching team is strong with university-enterprise compatibility. The College has hired Mitamura Arisumi, the 10th-generation heir of the Japanese lacquer art and Professor of Tokyo University of the Arts, and Professor Wang Tianliang, Director of the China Lacquer Culture and Industry Research Center of Minjiang University, as honorary deans; hired Zheng Xiuqian, Chinese Arts and Crafts master, Mitamura Ariyoshi, Ph.D. of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University, and master from “Zhidao Collection” for teaching, thus shaping a industry-education integration education system, and gradually improving students’ capabilities in cultural research, technology inheritance, product innovation, and communication and promotion.

The College actively advocates practical teaching and implement the master-apprentice system and dual-tutor system. The lacquer masters with decades of working experience are invited to give hands-on guidance to the students on the ancient methods, and pass on the original bodiless production technology; professor Mitamura Arisumi from Japan teach Japanese techniques: flat makie and Chinkin, allowing students to understand both Chinese and foreign lacquer art through comparison. The College organizes teachers and students to carry out professional practice activities in China Academy of Art, Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts and other places; encourages students to participate in competitions and holds exhibitions of teaching achievements regularly; organizes students to listen to academic lectures by experts from the Palace Museum to expand their horizons.

The College takes the lacquer art culture as the main point and integrates the spirit of artisans in university-enterprise cooperation and industry-education integration, aiming to cultivate application-oriented lacquer art talents who have an international vision and Chinese feelings, a solid lacquer foundation, and painting modeling ability and elegant aesthetic ability; who are engaged in creation, teaching, design, and scientific research; who are excellent in artistic literacy, innovative in thinking modes, and adaptable to the needs of the times.
