INTRODUCTION OF MINJIANG UNIVERSITY

 

Minjiang University is based in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province. In 2002, with the approval from the Ministry of Education, Minjiang University began to offer full-time bachelors degree programs. The university is supported by both Fujian Province and Fuzhou Municipality, with the latter playing the major role. Being on the priority list for development of the Fujian Provincial Government, and the provincial program of building top-level discipline, Minjiang University is a pilot institution offering professional masters degree programs that serve the country's special needs and a model institution for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education.

 

Minjiang University is an amalgamation of Fuzhou Teachers College, established in 1958, and Minjiang Vocational College, established in 1984. President Xi, the Party Committee Secretary of Fuzhou, doubled as the president of Minjiang University for 6 years (June 1990 - May 1996). He propounded the philosophy of “Not the biggest, but the best, but to meet the needs of society” and the principles of building a locally-based and market-oriented institution with a focus on quality and practicability of education. President Xi advocates the school running tent of “based on Fuzhou, facing the market, focusing on quality and highlighting application”. For more than 30 years, he has always been concerned about the development of the school. He sent congratulatory letters in his busy schedule for the 50th anniversary of the university in 2008 and the 60th anniversary of the school in 2018. On March 25, 2021, President Xi visited the school and delivered an important speech, pointing out the direction of efforts and providing fundamental guidance for the new development of the school. Minjiang University has grown into a fairly influential, and application-oriented university with a fairly complete range of disciplines and satisfactory education quality.

After more than 60 years of development, the university has become an application-oriented undergraduate university with complete disciplines and certain influence. Minjiang University has 16 colleges that offer 1 MBA degree program and 61 bachelors degree programs in all the eight major disciplines, covering economics, law, liberal arts, history, science, engineering, management and art. The university has one provincial first-class discipline (Plateau Discipline), 3 provincial key disciplines, 6 provincial applied disciplines, 2 national specialty programs, 1 national first-class specialty program, 14 provincial first-class specialty programs, 5 provincial specialty programs, 7 specialty programs in service industry, 3 provincial application oriented demonstrative program clusters, 5 provincial experimental specialty programs for innovation and entrepreneurship reform, and 6 provincial pilot areas for innovation in talent training model.

 

Minjiang University currently enrolls 1,6000 full-time students, with a faculty of more than 1000. 90.5% of the faculty hold masters or higher degrees, among which 39.6% hold doctorate degrees. The university has 12 provincial level Scientific Innovation Team of Institutions of Higher Learning, 138 faculty members on national level, ministerial level or provincial level talent programs. There are 44 provincial level scientific research innovation platforms, 4 provincial level key laboratories. 

 

Minjiang University covering 542,500floor space.The University owns 430 million yuans worth of equipment for teaching and research, 2049000 volumes of paper-based books and 1660000 e-books.

 

Minjiang University is open to partnership and maintains scientific and technological development cooperation with the districts and counties in Fuzhou, as well as high-caliber universities like Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, University of Science and Technology of China, Wuhan University of Technology, Donghua University, Jiangnan University and Wenzhou University. Besides, Minjiang University and universities in Taiwan, including Fu Jen Catholic University, Chinese Culture University, Shih Chien University and other universities in Taiwan jointly offers application-oriented undergraduate programs. Minjiang University establish friendly and cooperative relations with more than 30 colleges and universities in Japan, the Unites States, Australia, Canada and other countries. The university has cooperated with European University of Cyprus to set up a Sino-foreign cooperative college without independent legal person status at the undergraduate letel-Minjiang University International Digital Economy College (IDEC) and established Fujians first Sino-foreign joint venture with an independent legal personality-Fuzhou Melbourne Polytechnic.

 

Minjiang University has gained support from both the provincial and municipal CPC committees and governments as well as various sectors. The Fujian and the Fuzhou Municipal Government jointly formulated an implementation plan to support the development of Minjiang University. Besides, the municipal Government issued a special document bearing Fuzhou Municipal Governments suggestions on supporting the comprehensive upgrading of Minjiang University. Social charity funds, entrepreneurs and overseas Chinese leaders also donated generously, among which Fujian Fashu Foundation alone has donated more than 1000 million CNY.
